  1. SMC is started on July 2006 in San Francisco by Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells.
  2. Currently, SMC is in 152 cities with 97 actively holding monthly events.
  3. Mumbai, India is the first Asian city with SMC chapter, followed by South Korea and Kuala Lumpur. Cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Hong Kong and Singapore are in the process of forming local chapters.
  4. Social Media Club (SMC) is a local community-organized event, for the purpose of sharing best practices, establishing ethics and standards and for promoting media literacy.
  5. What sets Social Media Club apart is good content and access to a global community of speakers (whether in person or virtual/video).
  6. SMC hopes to engage not only those in marketing and PR, but also startups, educators, government workers, SME's (via chamber of commerce and SBA), students, etc. It always best to have a room full of diverse people/backgrounds/experience levels.
  7. Each city chooses how to organize the event, how often to meet, what systems to use to reach their community, etc. Meeting formats may vary over time - speaker or panel discussion, demo by attendees or social gathering.
  8. Membership is free. Anyone can join SMC events to join the conversations about social media.
  9. SMC City Portal will be launched sometime this year. This will provides each city with its own portal to share insights with local members and connect with global SMC network.
  10. Enthusiastic members, hard-working volunteers and supportive sponsors are making SMC happens each month in cities across the globe.

Quick small, but big, tweak to the above...Social Media Club is actually in 152 cities around the world, with 97 actively holding monthly events - the rest are getting ready to launch or don't meet as often. This stat is as of August 15, 2009.

Good stuff a brewing everywhere. Keep up the great work in Kuala Lumpur!
